For those of you still in need of a DVD Decrypter or if you need an updated version of one, this review hopes to clear up some confusion on what you should be using to decrypt DVD’s in 2011. First of all a DVD Decrypter is a software that runs in the background on a Windows 7, Vista, or XP based machine and scans your optical drives (CD,DVD, Blu-Ray) for movie discs that contatin copy protections codes that prevent the movie from being copied. Also many decrypters remove region codes so there is not a limitation on which country the disc was produced in and what country you are trying to watch it in. I could go into more details about country code settings but just know that DVD decrypters remove whatever code is on them.
The Free Decrypters – Good, Bad, & The Truth
There are a handful of free applications available so I will go over the few here, then I will list a few applications that incorporate Decrypting with Ripping. But first the DVD decrypters are……….
DVDFab HD Decrypter
DVDFab has been making decrypting and copying software since the CD came along so it’s no suprise that they offer their visitors a free tool to decrypt CD or DVD discs. By using this software you can decrypt the following protection codes: CSS, ArccOS, RipGuard, CPPM, APS and parts of AACS, BD+, and BD Live protections. That’s basically all the free version will do. If you actually want to burn, convert, or edit any of the video you will need to upgrade to one of their 7 choices. But all of their options are contained within 1 install which is nice because you only need to pay for what you want. But if all you need is decryption functions then only use it for that reason for free for as long as you want.
DVD43
This is a Free Windows Pre 7 only application that decrypts DVDs and CDs, by removing many of the older copy protections schemes so you can interact with the movie using any existing multimedia software you already have, like the included Roxio Creator that is sent on many new systems. DVD43 runs in your system tray, detects when you’ve inserted a new DVD, and automatically removes the encryption if it finds that it’s one that it can get around. Many have said that it still works on Windows 7 so it’s worth a shot if you need to decrypt DVD’s on your newer systems. DVD43 hasn’t been updated since 2006 so many new copy protections won’t be able to be hacked. This is an OK solution and it should work with most DVD’s but if you want more control you will need to get a paid (shareware) solution.
From Free Decrypting to Paid Options
We all know that free usually comes with a price. In the case of DVD decrypters that price is either an acutal price (upgrade options) or lack of support or lack of development. So if you want a free DVD decrypter it’s probably best to go with DVDFab which I mentioned above since that will have the most updates going forward. But if you want a decrypter that stay up to date to almost the minute a new protection is released then you need to take a good look at AnyDVD and AnyDVD HD.
AnyDVD $59 and AnyDVD HD $79 work just like the free options but with a few more additions that are really useful. Besides being the best DVD decrypter on the planet, AnyDVD can allow you to remove unwanted movie features like subtitles and FBI warning screens, and will disable auto movie playing software from starting up whenever you insert a DVD or Blu Ray disc. I find this useful since PowerDVD takes over 30 seconds to load on my PC. This software also allows you to control your drive speed. So if you have a noisy optical drive you can control the playback speed of the movie thus reducing the noise while trying to watch a movie. AnyDVD will work with any existing software you have for multimedia such as any DVD Copying Software, DVD Burning Software, or Multimedia Software bundle you already have. Just think of AnyDVD as a friendly companion holding the door open for you while you work with the audio and video content from a movie disc.
So when deciding which type of DVD decrypter to go with (either free or paid) free is usually the most logical choice but knowing what you want to do first will make this process much easier. Go with a free decrypter if you only need to decrypt the content and you already have another burning or coverting software installed. Go with a paid option if you need to copy, burn, or convert the video once it’s decrypted.
