Comparison Between Samsung Galaxy Note and Apple iPhone 4S

Last week we took a look at the iPad 3 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 11.6.  Today, here is a comparision between the Samsung Galaxy Note and the iPhone 4S.

Gone are the days when a minute change in the hardware, a tweak in the design and a new fancy name was all companies needed to woo the buyers. Nowadays people have become more tech-savvy and do considerable research before spending their hard earned money. They want features and technology which are new as well as useful and only when the product fulfils their requirement do they pull out their credit cards (Don’t use credit cards? Hassle free online shopping, no interest EMIs, the list goes on… )

Two of world’s greatest mobile manufacturers- Samsung and Apple who usually take their customers seriously came up with two cell phones which set new standards for the phones to come- The iPhone 4S and the Galaxy note. Let us now compare these two models.

Display

Samsung Galaxy Note with a display size of 5.3 inches dwarfs the iPhone which has a display screen size of only 3.5 (in comparison with the Note). So viewing videos, browsing internet, video calls all are just amazing with the Samsung Galaxy Note. The screen size of iPhone on the other hand is not bad while using basic features which a phone is supposed to do.

Samsung Note has the Super AMOLED display (high contrast ratio, readable under direct sunlight) capacitive touch-screen (multi touch) and has 16 million colours (same as latest laptops). Only difference is Apple iPhone uses the LED-backlit IPS TFT instead which may look dull compared to the Samsung.

Samsung Note has a screen resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels (highest among phones) and is made of the tough yet elegant Gorilla glass, iPhone on the other hand could manage only 640 x 960 pixels and has a oleophobic coating (scratch and oil resistant)

Body

The samsung has its usual strong plastic built, the iPhone on the other hand has steel and glass finish (strong and classy). The Note is quite big in comparison with 146.9 x 83 x 9.7 mm dimensions as against iPhone which is 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm. Note is also on the heavier side at 178g (not as heavy compared with the size) against iPhone.(140g)

Processor and OS

Galaxy note has the Android Gingerbread v2.3.5 OS, (thousands of downloadable applications) Apple on the other hand has its own iOS 5 (secure and smooth). Both the phones feature Dual-core Cortex-A9 processors with the only difference in their processor speeds. Samsung note is a notch ahead with a 1.4 GHz processor as against Appleís 1GHZ processor.

Camera

Both the phones feature 8Mp autofocus cameras with LED flash and HD video shooting (1080p) capabilities in 30fps. One difference however is the secondary camera. Samsung marches ahead with a 2MP camera (clear video calls) as against VGA camera in the iPhone.

Battery

Samsung Note comes with the 2500 Li-ion battery (26h talk time). Apple iPhone 4S on the other hand has a 1432 Li-Po battery (14 hours talktime).

Extra Features

Apple clearly has the upper hand here with the Siri application which can take voice commands and performs various tasks without having the need to type. Also the iCloud feature will make data transfer between your iDevices a breeze. Samsung on the other hand has the SPen stylus through which you can write or draw on the screen.

So Which Is the Better Phone?

Samsung clearly has the upper hand in hardware and features. It is however quite bulky for a phone where the iPhone 4S can capitalize. Also the Siri application can make the iPhone stand out in the crowd of smart phones.  Both devices support MP4 video which is useful for converting your DVD movies into a MP4 format.

Here is a video that I found that shows the two devices in action. (sorry for the translated text, once we find an English version we will replace the video)

Special thanks goes to Divya Rawat who is a blogger and likes to write tech related articles. She works as a content writer in an SEO company and likes to read and blog about various Gadgets.

I stick with the iPhone. I turn back the Galaxy. No pocket to carry it. It is not a phone and is not a Tablet. I hope Apple keep it this size.
Battery life is terrible in the Galaxy. Not only you carry a big devise but also a battery backup. No wonder why iPhone is out selling

These phones have such different uses cases that a comparison is almost counter-productive.

The 3.5in size was obviously designed for the SMALLEST-handed of their target audience to use SINGLE-handed. That means that most users could handle a larger phone, and those who don’t generally operate single-handed are not limited by size as a major criterion.

That is not to say that 3.5 is not a nice compact size for a phone. However, it does not cater well for the particular use cases for which the Note was obviously designed. Refer to the YouTube of the Note’s announcement.

That is not to say that the Note is not more useful for a lot of average-sized phone users, especially those who would like to net browse while out and about, but not carry a separate tablet, or who would find writing faster than typing/swyping at 10-16 lines per page.

Fortunately we have a commodity phone market where all sorts of people sizes and usage patterns are being catered for.
