You Just Might Be a Digital DVD Pirate

Are you a digital pirate?

We most of us think about Pirates a few names come to mind from stories we have heard such as the most recent Jack Sparrow from  Pirates of the Caribbean, to the infamous Blackbeard to Long John Silver (yes he was a pirate, it’s not only a fast food fish chain). But in reality most of us might be a modern-day pirate without digital goods which include copying music CD’s and copy protected DVD movies to downloading music and videos online.  While some of us know exactly what we are doing and since it’s hard to detect, we make a pirated copy of a disc without even blinking an eye.  Yet others are oblivious that making a copy of something you own and giving it away is considered illegal according to the MPAA.

Pirating in the 21st Century

To bring  awareness to those that are unaware and oblivious to what modern-day pirating is the movie industry recently began adding short 1-2 minute movie style videos to nearly all new movie released on DVD and Blu-Ray discs in addition to the initial video that plays with the warning video that it is illegal to copy and distribute this video without proper permission.  In these new awareness videos a scene unfolds like this:  A teenage girl is shown dancing around her bedroom with music playing in the background which is a typical scene nowadays.  While this is going on the camera pans over to her computer where it shows that she is downloading the latest movie from a movie sharing site.  Finally a text caption appears saying, “You Wouldn’t Steal a Car”, while the video then shows a burglar breaking into an expensive car.  Then the video proceeds to show other items that are stolen like a handbag, a TV, then a person taking a physical DVD movie from store and putting it in his pocket.  Then the reference that downloading DVD’s is the same as stealing a DVD from a store.

There will always be digital pirates around trying to take advantage of the original content creators.   So these ads are primarily aimed at the casual movie downloaders to guilt them into stopping doing these acts.  The debate that Hollywood is losing out on millions of dollars per year due to pirating is something that will play out for years to come.  But the fact remains that downloading movies and DVD pirating is illegal, but can you really compare it to stealing a car?  To some stealing is stealing no matter what the value and to others it’s a non-issue because of the reason that they were not going buy the movie in the first place, so no harm no foul.  Let us know your thoughts about this in the comments section below.

So to have some fun with being a pirate we came up with some clever one liners that might just make you a digital pirate. (Thanks Jeff Foxworthy)

  • If you copied your kids SpongeBob DVD for your sister you might be a digital pirate.
  • If you ever burned your DRM iTunes music to a CD and then ripped them back into iTunes you might be a digital pirate.
  • If you downloaded the latest episode of The Office because you missed it last night you might be a digital pirate.
  • If you know what a torrent is you might be a digital pirate.
  • If you ever searched for a game crack you might be a digital pirate.
  • If you anti-virus software automatically detects a trojan called keygen.exe you might be a digital pirate.

I’ll continue to add more to this list as I think of them, but for now please share yours in the comments below. They may even make the master list. :)

Stay in the Know

Even though there are plenty of DVD Copy Software titles still available, it’s important to know what makes a software illegal and what makes it OK to use.   The main thing to keep in mind is that the software should not violate any copyright infringement laws, mainly if you are using it in a country where these are inforced.  However most of these types of software applications that you find on store shelves and through big brand online stores are good to use because they do not contain the DeCSS ripper function which is the process that removes the copy protection found on todays movie discs.

Interesting article. However some of it may be irrelevant.

One of the problems at the moment with some countries is the copyright acts are old and weren’t around during the digital boom so copying some files to mp3′s is still classed as illegal although they are trying to change this and give more clarification to the public.

Those adverts are also old and to be honest didn’t work. It seems a lot of companies are trying to offer films digitally at cheap prices, thinking people will take it. The problem is a lot of people are simply downloading the stuff because its free, and why pay for it. I don’t agree with it and used to run a small licensed online radio station which I’m bringing back very soon with a new identity (licenses, that’s another thing, the public have it easy in my opinion ha). It’s people’s work, and you wouldn’t want someone stealing your work for free.

Obviously passing a CD on is different. If I was an artist, I’d like it. Someone buy’s my CD and then lends it to someone, who in turn likes it and may buy it. Obviously the problem is ripping – you can rip all your friends collections to your own PC and you don’t need to pay anything. I like to buy CDs and show my support, I mean if everyone stopped buying them, most bands would disappear and while there’s too much mediocre music out there today, its better than having none.

Oh and just to say, Torrents are legal. Obviously the majority of people use torrents for illegal purposes, but it’s just a Protozoa. I mean in my opinion if people call torrents illegal they should also call .exe files illegal and every other method.

Hi well I come from a little different point of view. See I’m totally blind and require a screen access program to use the computer and freedomscientific that makes jaws thinks it’s ok to charge $10,000 for the standard version which can only be used on home versions of windows and $12,000 for xp pro and pro versions of 7, and that’s not the end of that then you have to go through activation in which you ohnly get three keys to your name and after you use those you have to call the company and bet them to give you more so if it happens to fall on the weekend that you used all your keys and you didn’t call the company to have your keys reset and you had to reinstall windows or even if you change a piece of hardware out such as memmory a hard drive or even a dvd drive jaws will require reactivation it wont even honner the authorization you have. So I fiel like the blind population gets taken advantage of not to mention highway rovery and the fact that most of the people who need this adaptive technology can’t even afford it because they aren’t able to fine employment and these adaptive software vendors just call any one up that might have bought something from them in the past like there just made out of money. So when it comes to cd and dvd copying I’ve gotten to the point where I just don’t care besides the fact that the recording indistrie didn’t take thre prices on cds down to resonable prices after they had to admit that cds are vomerable to scratches plus the fact that when it comes to some of the older recordings the record companies don’t even put time into the projects to make them sound there best anywayand there’s some of those recordings that were originally recorded in stereo and they just mix it down to mono.

Sorry for my bad English, I’m Croatian.

I’m a digital pirate and I don’t care what the world thinks. If I like it, I buy it. If not, then nothing ventured nothing gained. I’m in no financial position to afford spending on things I may not enjoy since I won’t be able to resell them at a decent price after that.

I have to say though, there are bands, groups, companies etc. whose products I always buy straight away because I know they’re going to be worth the money even when the price is a little higher than normal… but, say, when I hear about a new band and I like a song, I’ll download an album to see if it’s worth spending however much on their album before I actually buy it.
