We most of us think about Pirates a few names come to mind from stories we have heard such as the most recent Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, to the infamous Blackbeard to Long John Silver (yes he was a pirate, it’s not only a fast food fish chain). But in reality most of us might be a modern-day pirate without digital goods which include copying music CD’s and copy protected DVD movies to downloading music and videos online. While some of us know exactly what we are doing and since it’s hard to detect, we make a pirated copy of a disc without even blinking an eye. Yet others are oblivious that making a copy of something you own and giving it away is considered illegal according to the MPAA.
Pirating in the 21st Century
To bring awareness to those that are unaware and oblivious to what modern-day pirating is the movie industry recently began adding short 1-2 minute movie style videos to nearly all new movie released on DVD and Blu-Ray discs in addition to the initial video that plays with the warning video that it is illegal to copy and distribute this video without proper permission. In these new awareness videos a scene unfolds like this: A teenage girl is shown dancing around her bedroom with music playing in the background which is a typical scene nowadays. While this is going on the camera pans over to her computer where it shows that she is downloading the latest movie from a movie sharing site. Finally a text caption appears saying, “You Wouldn’t Steal a Car”, while the video then shows a burglar breaking into an expensive car. Then the video proceeds to show other items that are stolen like a handbag, a TV, then a person taking a physical DVD movie from store and putting it in his pocket. Then the reference that downloading DVD’s is the same as stealing a DVD from a store.
There will always be digital pirates around trying to take advantage of the original content creators. So these ads are primarily aimed at the casual movie downloaders to guilt them into stopping doing these acts. The debate that Hollywood is losing out on millions of dollars per year due to pirating is something that will play out for years to come. But the fact remains that downloading movies and DVD pirating is illegal, but can you really compare it to stealing a car? To some stealing is stealing no matter what the value and to others it’s a non-issue because of the reason that they were not going buy the movie in the first place, so no harm no foul. Let us know your thoughts about this in the comments section below.
So to have some fun with being a pirate we came up with some clever one liners that might just make you a digital pirate. (Thanks Jeff Foxworthy)
- If you copied your kids SpongeBob DVD for your sister you might be a digital pirate.
- If you ever burned your DRM iTunes music to a CD and then ripped them back into iTunes you might be a digital pirate.
- If you downloaded the latest episode of The Office because you missed it last night you might be a digital pirate.
- If you know what a torrent is you might be a digital pirate.
- If you ever searched for a game crack you might be a digital pirate.
- If you anti-virus software automatically detects a trojan called keygen.exe you might be a digital pirate.
I’ll continue to add more to this list as I think of them, but for now please share yours in the comments below. They may even make the master list.
Stay in the Know
Even though there are plenty of DVD Copy Software titles still available, it’s important to know what makes a software illegal and what makes it OK to use. The main thing to keep in mind is that the software should not violate any copyright infringement laws, mainly if you are using it in a country where these are inforced. However most of these types of software applications that you find on store shelves and through big brand online stores are good to use because they do not contain the DeCSS ripper function which is the process that removes the copy protection found on todays movie discs.
