The Facts about Solid State Storage and Why It's Needed

Advancements in direct attached storage DAS technology have enabled a multiplicity of storage and networking capabilities for organizations with high information storage and sharing needs. SCSI solutions have been equally important, allowing for a simple way to attach anything from a storage device to a printer and everything else in between to a computer. These are all helpful devices and technologies to consider as your modern business grows. If your business or other organization has a server with large networking and computing requirements, you probably need to think about solid state storage if you aren’t already utilizing this technology.

The Benefits of SSS

Solid state storage can offer a number of key benefits. If you aren’t aware of what this technology is and what it can do for you and your organization, consider these important features and functions:

• Adds new storage capacities (300GB of SSD storage)

• Enables utilization of SSD technology as a secondary cache tier for the existing drive volume in a server

• Maximizes performance of transactional IO capabilities in the true acceleration of applications

• Provides accelerated capabilities for high-performance IO in SSD arrays, which are connected to MegaRAID controller cards

The Basics of SSS

When it comes to computer storage, solid state technology has remained on the cutting edge since its inception. It is comprised of silicon microchips that electronically store data, whereas older technologies relied on magnetic storage techniques. Do you remember hard disk drives, or when magnetic oxide tape was used to store data? SSS technology changed the game and made these clunky storage technologies obsolete. There are three form factors that solid-storage can be found in.

These are the following:

• Solid State Cards

• Solid State Modules

• Solid State Drives (SSDs)

SSDs in particular continue to shake up the storage landscape. According to IDC, SSD shipments jumped more than 66% in the third quarter of 2011, compared with the same period in 2010. Part of their growing popularity is the ability of SSDs to accelerate transactional I/O performance for applications such as Web serving, data warehousing, data mining, online transaction processing and high-performance computing.

There are no mechanical parts in solid state cards, drives or modules. Some of them are attached to computers through direct attached storage DAS technology and SCSI solutions, while others are integrated into the server. With this technology in place, organizations can quickly and easily transfer data from one piece of storage media to the next. The data transfer is also much more reliable and predictable in the long run, and enables a longer lifespan for the storage media. SSS devices are also able to run cooler and use less power than other electronic devices, with the same levels of data integrity. In addition to energy efficiency, these devices also tend to be smaller and lighter in weight.

This isn’t a new technology by any means, but there are still many businesses and organizations that don’t realize how much it could benefit their operation. With flash memory and RAM-based systems to choose from and price points continuing to drop, now is a good time to start considering it.  If you’d like more information on Solid State Storage, please visit http://www.lsi.com/
