Tablet Wars: iPad 3 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 11.6 – Infographic

Since the release of the original iPad, Apple has set the standard for innovation in mobile computing. Despite the fact that many consumers already own previous models, there is still plenty of anticipation regarding the new iPad 3. However, in recent years competitors such as the Samsung have sought to dig into Apple’s market share with comparable devices such as the Galaxy Tab. In this article we compare and contrast the rumoured Galaxy Tab 11.6 with the upcoming iPad 3.

Dimensions and Form

Much of the speculation surrounding the iPad 3 is with regard to form. Some feel it is imperative Apple offer a new chassis in order to justify the new label. Others contend that the interior processing power will be enough to warrant an upgrade. In all likelihood, the device will see minimal change in design, given the case is already razor thin and aesthetically pleasing. Similarly, the Samsung Galaxy Tab will maintain the same form, regardless of the significant increase in the size of the display. The surrounding bezel will be trimmed in order to accommodate the new screen.

Display Screen

The retina display on the iPhone has been lauded for its pixel density and clarity, and rumour has it that the same screen will be fitted into the iPad 3. This will double the resolution of the previous model to an astounding 2048 x 1536 pixels on a 9.7 inch screen. On the other hand, the Galaxy Tab will offer a larger 11.6 inch screen at 2560 x 1600 resolution. However, the quality of the retina display technology should result in crisper, more vibrant colours.

Storage and RAM

Mobile devices have never been designed to hold an abundance of space, relying on the internet and the cloud to store data. Nonetheless, Apple will likely not change its stance on microSD cards, which makes the Galaxy Tab more attractive to those who seek more flexible options.

The iPad 2 was equipped with 512MB of RAM, and may see an upgrade to 1GB. Samsung may further up the stakes by pushing its Galaxy Tab to a 1.5 or 2GB model, offering more memory and alternative methods of storage than its competitor.

Processing Power

According to reports, the Galaxy Tab will be powered by a 2GHz ARM Cortex-A15 processor on their proprietary Exynos 5250 chipset and a Mali-T604 GPU. The iPad 3 will also boast new hardware in the form of a quad-core processor as opposed to increasing speed. In addition to extra cores, rumours insist that the iPad 3 will feature a stronger GPU along the lines of a PowerVR G6400.

Operating System

The launch of the iPad 3 will coincide with the launch of the new 5.1 version of iOS, which promises to be far less buggy than its previous incarnation. Samsung’s device will run Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0. Each operating system is well equipped and provides an intuitive user interface, with the differences often coming down to personal preference and the compatibility of your favourite apps.

Camera

The iPad 3 is believed to offer the same 8MP primary camera as the iPhone 4S. The secondary camera, however, may be upgraded to HD to improve the quality of video chat interactions. Samsung has yet to release any details regarding its snapper, but speculation has it that the Galaxy Tab will not be installed with a high-resolution front-facing camera.

Winner: Apple iPad 3

Here is a nice infographic showing the differences between the iPad and the Galaxy Tab:

Conclusion

Apple’s marketing strategy and fervent fan base will ensure that the iPad 3 will be a success regardless of the quality of its competitors. The more interesting dilemma will be how to combat tablet fatigue, as the novelty of tablets diminishes and iPads begin to compete with previous iterations of itself. However, as technology grows, the need for upgrades will continue to exist, albeit at a rate more akin to desktop computers. New models will continue to be produced to satisfy these markets, and the quality of the Galaxy Tab offers a viable and distinct alternative to those who prefer the Android operating system.

Why is the infographic showing the iPad with no cameras, no viideo chat, IOS 4.1, and 256 MB of RAM?

The chart has out-dated information for iPad 2, and more out-dated for the coming iPad 3.
