Why WeBlogBetter Should Choose Me – Survivor Blog Contest

May 22, 2011 by Rob Boirun 19 Comments

I’m doing something out of the oridinary today. I’ve decided to enter a blogging contest that weblogbetter.com is putting on and tomorrow is the deadline for entries.  The owner of the blog and the idea is Kiesha Easley and I think is a totally unique idea and in a sense is giving blogging a sort of coolness factor by putting it into a competition and drawing attention it.

The way it will run is by grouping 2 teams of 5 bloggers together and will work like the show Survivor.  Basically each week the teams will be givin a set of blogging tasks and after the task is complete the losing team will need to eliminate one of the team members, and this will run for 10 weeks til there is only one remaining.  The winner will get to keep the blog that they helped put together and $1000 prize money put in by the sponsors below this post.  To enter my name into the contest I hearby declair the following reasons why I should be picked:

  1. I have a tech background and have been working with web sites both front end and back end . Basically I know how websites/blogs are setup and run.
  2. I am a tech blogger on numerous tech sites in addition to my own.
  3. Because I live in Huntsville, AL ( Space capitol of the world, but you didn’t know that)
  4. I like to work with a group of people dedicated to one central mission (NASA speak)
  5. I have been a full time webmaster/blogger for 10 years now.
  6. Because my 2 daughters think I will be cool.
  7. Because I want to break out of the norm and learn new skills to expand my knowledge of blogging. I don’t see any college classes offered anywhere on this.
  8. To help come up with the next viral video.  Antoine Dotson lived about 3 minutes from me.
  9. Because daddy needs a new pair of shoes.
  10. Finally, because I invented blogging.

    Hi Rob
Well done on taking the action you did to enter ‘Surviving the Blog.’ There’s a really good buzz around this contest now; all credit to Keisha and her team. Good luck with this journey towards blogging better :)

    • http://www.burnworld.com Rob Boirun

      HI Anthony,

Looking forward to teaming up with you or competing against you if we are selected :) Sounds like fun.

Hi Rob…yeah..let the battle commence. Hoping I am selected and looking forward to being part of winning team. Fingers crossed. well done for entering. yeah,my daughters think it is cool as well…lol

    OMG, I got Rickrolled. LOL
Okay, that’s enough alphabet soup. First, thanks for throwing your hat into the ring. It’s great to see more bloggers step up out of the conventional muck and mire.

Second, thanks for the initiation into the vaunted(?) ranks of the rickrolled. I never had a clue as to what that was about – linking it mentally to Ashton Kutcher’s Punk’d and to the idea of being relieved of one’s wallet at knifepoint.

I hope you get selected – despite the rickrolling – we only get so many chances to be seen as “cool” by our daghters. I, for one, am nearly out of opportunities.

    Cheers,

    Mitch

I’m glad to see that someone appreciates the RickRoll. haha Yes it’s a dated tactic but still fun at times.

    Hey Rob,

Thanks for visiting my blog. Great one you have here. Hope to meet you there too!

  • http://jahangiri.us/new Holly Jahangiri

#1 and #10 – I started blogging when Blogger was still in beta. ;) A reporter with the Hindustan Times ran across my attempt to define the word “blog” and declared me a “veteran blogger.” I wish I still had a copy of that column – it made me smile. And had me scratching my head for a decade. But now, I think I can legitimately claim the title.

#2 – then Lord help us, we need to come up with a niche blog on anything BUT tech, just to make it more fun and challenging for you!

#3 – actually, I did know that. My daughter went to Space Camp in 5th Grade. Along with the ENTIRE SCHOOL DISTRICT (Cy-Fair)’s 5th Grade class. I’m in Houston. Houston’s where the mothership resides (well, actually, Clear Lake). I’ve also been to Cape Canaveral, and was originally born in Daytona – just a stone’s throw from the birthplace of speed. (Which now sounds horribly wrong and slightly illegal.)

#4 – sounds like you’ll be an asset to whatever team you’re put on, if you’re chosen as one of the contestants! Good luck!

#5 – I have a day job that does not involve blogging, but have been a professional writer (as in, earned my primary living primarily through writing) since 1983.

#6 – they already think you’re cool. If they don’t, then no amount of blogging will make it so. But they love you, cool or not.

#7 – Now, see, why IS that? We should totally develop the coursework. And the certification. No one gets the Blogger Stamp of Approval but that they come through us!! Now, do we charge $47 or $5995? We definitely need to find an interesting niche – tech is so NOT “out of the norm.”

#8 – So is Antoine your secret weapon and co-conspiratorial ally in the contest??

#9 – I need a new cell phone. One that actually, you know, makes calls. Mine’s a great little palmtop PC and navigation system, but it sucks as a phone.

#10 – No, you didn’t – not unless Al invented the Internet. I like your alternative reality, though.

    • http://www.burnworld.com Rob Boirun

#2 I hope it’s not tech. I would like to see what else the world of blogging has in store.
      #6 True.
#7 I like. How about charging something in the middle.
      #8 shhhh
#9 Come visit my cell phone affiliate blog I’m sure there is one on there that will suite your needs. :)
#10 Rickrolling is still fun. Some get it and some don’t. I’m a dork at times.

  • http://www.morphodesigns.com Mitchell Allen

Hi Rob, I hope you’re not too disappointed. I’m glad I met you and hope to keep the connections alive!

    Cheers,

    Mitch

    • http://www.burnworld.com Rob Boirun

Thanks Mitch, good luck with it and keep in touch. I’ll be checking in on you guys…

  • http://thewriteinsight.com/blog Anthony Smits

    Hey Rob,

Thank you for being part of the race till now. Like Mitch says, I hope you’re too peeved.Do still come and throw tomatoes at us – well, at Holly’s crew :) Do some more of that rick rolling on their blog.. . . All the best.

    • http://jahangiri.us/new Holly Jahangiri

Why at MY crew?? I’d have welcomed Rob with open arms – and hope he’s NOT too peeved (goodness, man – was that intentional or just BAD editing?) at not being chosen. (God knows, I cringe inside – my inner 7th grader still remembers not being chosen for the team, only to add insult to injury, was usually standing there listening to the team captains say, “Look, I’ll give you my BEST player if you’ll just – PLEASE!! – take HER, too!!”)

I hope you’ll stay involved, Rob, and egg us on – or at least throw eggs at the Antman’s team! (Let those eggs sit out in the sun for a day or so, first, will ya?)

    • http://www.burnworld.com Rob Boirun

Thanks guys, no hurt feelings. I was a late entry and just threw my hat in the ring to see what would happen. I’ll see what you all do and hopefully I’ll get another shot in the next go round.

  • http://thewriteinsight.com/blog Anthony Smits

    Aha!

Welcome to the wild side of Blogging, Rob!

You get your chance with the tomatoes after all, with Leslie’s withdrawl. Sorry Holly. But I’m sure you’ll join me in welcoming Rob to the ring of combatants. I’m sure you guys are going just peachy anyway. I’m intrigued to see what your side comes up with.

    • http://jahangiri.us/new Holly Jahangiri

You’d better start from scratch or Rob won’t feel he had an equal say in all the planning. Sorry to hear that, Anthony… but congratulations, Rob! You got your shot, after all! I’m happy for you.

Why did Leslie withdraw? Were you guys intimidating your own teammate over there before the contest even STARTED? Man… you are so mean. That, or all the talk of eating earthworms and grubs terrified him – did he think we really were going to have a Survival style world’s scariest foods contest?

I tell you what – I’d man up if Mitchell would eat the earthworms first. But I do draw the line at anything – and I do mean ANYTHING – in the arachnid family, even if it’s deep friend and smothered in dark chocolate. I’ve heard scorpions are kind of spicy, though. I like spicy. Okay – head to head with Mitch on bhut jalokia. Mitch, you in? You always wanted Angelina Jolie’s lips on your face, didn’t you?

      • http://www.morphodesigns.com Mitchell Allen

Rob, welcome to the team! This is Awesome!

Holly, attempting to sow seeds of discord? And Angelina Jolie’s lips scare me more than the bees that stung her.

Funny you should mention bugs: Chefs vs. the City was in Nawlins, eating fried crickets.

Ugh. I already conceded culinary grandness to you. There’s just no way, well, there’s always a gun to my head and REALLY being stranded… but to just up and eat bugs? Nahh.

        Cheers,

        Mitch

        • http://jahangiri.us/new Holly Jahangiri

Moi? Would I do that? I just want to know what you did get get Leslie to quit, and whether y’all think you’re a match for Rob, here. Seems to me he’s got the technical expertise and could just lock y’all out of the blog if you aren’t nice to him.

          • http://www.burnworld.com Rob Boirun

Thanks for the tip Holly. Perhaps I can use that to my advantage. ;-)
