LG Super Blu BH200 Ready for Action

Dec 12, 2007 - 10:22:45 AM - LG has released their second-generation LG Super Blu player, the BH200, a multi-format high-definition disc player that plays both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs.

Predecessor of the BH100, this new player carrier can work as Blu-ray and HD DVD video player. It offers access to between 50-70 percent more movies titles than a single-format player.

“LG introduced the BH200 to focus on consumer needs by ending the confusion caused by the current format war,” said Allan Jason, LG’s vice president of consumer electronics marketing. “This second generation, dual-format player allows consumers to enjoy their favorite movies, features and extras, regardless of format, on the best-in-class high-definition media player.”

BH200 features the "BD Standard Profile," and is also ready for the new "BD Profile 1.1," for when Blu-ray discs with the new profile become available in 2008; viewers will be able to enjoy options such as "picture-in-picture."

It also allows web connectivity on a number of current HD DVDs, enabling viewing of storyboards, production videos and director's commentary, as well as up-do-date and real-time information while the movie is playing. Standard audio CDs and DVDs will also play on the BH200, with SD resolution video up-scaled to Full HD 1080p resolution.

The LG Super Blu Player comes packed with advanced per-pixel motion-adaptive 3D de-interlacing for HD and SD video along with per-pixel noise and compression artifact reduction.

Qdeo has the potential to deliver details in darker scene with Adaptice Contrast Enhancement. It also renders vivid colors through Intelligent Color Remapping (ICR) to give a rich video experience from Blu-rays discs, HD DVDs and standard DVDs.

Sadly the biggest thing against LG’s BH200 is the cost, USD 999. This compares with the recent Wal-mart USD 99 HD DVD player special, along with Blu-ray players starting at USD 350. Even with a more expensive HD DVD player, the combined price is still seriously cheaper than LG’s alternative.

However LG has the benefit of being one machine, instead of two. LG's Tim Alessi, director of product development, says the company is watching the pricing situation. "We still believe there's a convenience factor that will justify that premium. How much that premium will be remains to be seen."
