Feb 12, 2008 - 10:19:11 AM -

Your computer is a complex machine comprising several hardware and software components. This is the reason why there are several causes of computer errors.

For instance, runtime error 217, problems with DLL files, outdated Msvcrt.Dll or MS DCOM file, a missing Stdole32.Tlb file, incorrect regional settings, malware infections, and the code 10 error may all occur due to missing, corrupt, or buggy device drivers. Similarly, the msoe.dll error usually occurs due to problems with the Outlook Express application to which the DLL file belongs.

Although, each of these conditions has their own specific cause, there are certain common problems that may result in computer errors.

If your well-functioning computer suddenly starts displaying errors, it might indicate a malware infection. There are several different types of malware programs lurking around there days. For example, programs such as virus and Trojans, infiltrate your computer and quickly start replicating on your system, and if you’re on a network, to other computers on your network. Virus programs usually slow down your system and display several errors, and Trojans have the capability to completely take over your system and control the operations of various programs. There is another stream of malware programs today, known as the spyware and adware programs. Spyware programs usually infiltrate your computer through dubious freeware applications and start collecting your personal and confidential information in order to send it to external sources. This information is usually utilized by affiliate websites to display pop-ads (adware) on your system without your consent. To prevent these programs from infecting your computer, you must regularly scan the system using updated antivirus and antispyware tools and remove any infectious file or program from the system.

The registry contains all the configuration information of your computer, and is also a major cause of several computer errors. As your PC gets older, a lot of junk information infiltrates the registry, causing registry bloating. A large, bloated registry fragments and corrupts easily. Registry problems occur over time, and usually cause gradual deterioration in system performance. To prevent computer errors due to registry problems, you must regularly perform registry maintenance to keep it free from unwanted stuff. You can do this easily with the help of a registry cleaner tool. There are many different types of registry tools available over the Web. You can select the one that is compatible with your Windows operating system and that has good user reviews. Four main tasks that you can perform using a good registry cleaner tool are:

  • Perform a through and deep scan of the registry to remove all unwanted information from the registry.
  • Detect erroneous registry entries and repair them to resolve several computer errors, related to DLLs, EXEs, and so on.
  • Defrag the registry to compress and reindex its files to optimize the registry and as a result speed up the system.
  • Back up the registry regularly, to ensure that you can restore it in case there is some irreversible error in the current registry.

Computer errors such as no disk space error and memory errors may occur if your hard disk is full of junk and fragmented files. To combat and prevent this problem, your Windows XP and Windows Vista computers come equipped with the Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter tools. Using the Disk Cleanup tool, you can:

  • Empty Recycle Bin
  • Clear Internet Explorer and Program setup files.
  • Empty the Temp folder
  • Uninstall unwanted programs and Windows components.
  • Remove all but the latest system restore points.

After you have cleaned the hard disk, run the Disk Defragmenter tool. When you run this tool, the selected hard disk drive is analyzed for fragmented files, and then you can use the feature to consolidate all broken files and enhance the performance of the hard disk and prevent computer errors.
