As promised in our recent post telling you how to build a custom DVR PC, we’ve thrown together a list for all of you out there to build your own affordable yet powerful DVR/Media Center. We’ll give you the skinny on what you do and don’t need to build an awesome Custom DVR Media Center PC Build for a super affordable price! We went with AMD’s proprietary APU here because of the powerful GPU built into the processor. If you forego the video card, AMD’s richland series should be more than adequate for Hardware processing. Keep in mind, you’ll still need a video card with a TV Tuner to input a video signal into your computer in order to make your build a true DVR. Regardless of whether you buy a separate video card or use an APU, AMD’s price and power at the bottom spectrum of the CPU market push it far ahead of anything from the Intel camp.

MythBuntu is a really cool, heavily modded version of Ubuntu. The OS is 100% free and built from the ground up for Media playback by combining MythTV and Ubuntu. You can check it out and try it out in the link above. Again, you can save yourself about $50 by foregoing the video card. However, your PC won’t have the ability to record video from a Television source. Of course, you could make that an upgrade for the future.
