I’m sure you all remember our recent Newbie Guide to Building a Custom PC. We’ve decided to expand on the idea with custom PC builds for various aspects of the tech world. Today, we will cover the parts necessary to assemble a custom mid range Workstation PC build. For those of you not familiar with workstation PC’s, they’re high end computers typically used by graphic designers (and other tech professionals). Obviously, designers deal with photo and video editing. We’ve compiled a list of materials so you too can build your own mid range Professional workstation for graphic design. Remember, you’ll still need an Operating system to run everything. You can pick up Linux Ubuntu, Microsoft Windows 8, or Apple OS X Mavericks (assuming you’re willing to do a bit of tweaking with Adam Dachis’ Hackintosh workaround and a legitimate copy of the OS). You can find the Hackintosh guide here: http://lifehacker.com/the-always-up-to-date-guide-to-building-a-hackintosh-o-5841604
Just a side note: modern workstations are much less reliant on dedicated GPU’s verses workstations from years past. For photo editing and basic video editing, the integrated GPU on the processor will probably suffice. For designers primarily dealing with heavy 3D CADD design or video work, you may want to check out a dedicated GPU such as the one below. You’re certainly free to pick out a different GPU, but make sure it’s a workstation class GPU. These cards include 3D modeling code not found on gaming cards. I also recommend nVidia here as it includes CUDA which is found on Adobe Premier.
