How To Convert VHS Videos To DVD

Posted on by in Video Converting - No Comments

VHS-cassetteMany people have invested a lot of their time, over the years, in making VHS video recordings of important family events, such as weddings, christenings and birthdays. The VHS camcorder was also an essential part of the luggage on any family holiday. Many of us managed to acquire a massive collection of VHS videos.

However, the demise of the VHS video player has meant that it is no longer easy to view these. Also, as they grow older, it is likely that the quality of the video recordings will diminish, meaning that, even if you still have a video player, one day the tapes may no longer be viewable. One way of getting round these problems is by exploring the ways that the VHS video can be converted to DVD format, so that it can be viewed on a standard DVD player.

There are three main types of VHS to DVD conversion, these are discussed below:

1)      Standalone DVD Recorder

This is probably the most straightforward way to convert VHS videos to the DVD medium so that you can continue to watch your old home videos for many years to come. The basis on which it operates is quite simple. You insert a video cassette into the appropriate compartment and a DVD burner on the other side of the recorder will reproduce the content of the cassette in DVD format.

It is important to point out that the DVD will only convert the VHS recording up to its existing quality. It will not improve on it. Additionally, you will not be able to use this technique to convert any copyrighted VHS recordings. Finally, the DVD recorders were originally quite expensive, causing some people to shy away from using them. However, for ease of use, not least because it is the only method that does not require the introduction of a computer, it has still been many people’s choice over the years.

2)      Video Conversion Software

The second method of converting VHS to DVD format is via video conversion software. There are numerous products of this kind available. Some of these are excellent; others are not quite so good!

The manner in which the software works is basically to create a digitized version of the VHS recording, which is written to the hard drive of the computer. The conversion package will also come with video burning software so that, as soon as the digital version of the cassette has been built, it can be burnt onto a blank DVD. It will also be necessary to obtain the necessary cables to connect the VHS recorder to the computer unless these are included in the package. The software will usually work on all versions of Windows, but not all will work on a Mac. It is important to check this out before spending any money on a product. 3)      Conversion Companies

Sending the VHS recordings to one of the companies that specializes in conversion is likely to be the most expensive way of going about the conversion task. However, its main advantage is that these companies are often able to enhance the quality of the video recording and even retrieve damaged data. Because of the relative expense, however, most people will only go to a conversion company if they have only one or two video recordings for conversion or if they have damaged recordings that are important to them.

The reason that most people captured important events on their VHS video camera was to preserve them for the future, so that they could look back at their treasured memories as they grew older. Even though the VHS camera and the cassette recordings that it produced have been overtaken by modern technology, VHS to DVD conversion means that those important memories can still live on.
