A recent blitz move on the proxy websites supporting the popular files and torrents of major file sharing sites like Pirate Bay and Kickass Torrents made many of these files unavailable to site users. Proxy websites (like Proxy House, one of the proxies most hit by the recent operation) have all risen in popularity in the past few years, when major torrent websites were blocked by the jurisdictions of several Western counties (such as France, Italy, and the UK etc.). Thus, proxy websites started being used as an alternate route to the servers of the popular Pirate Bay torrents and Kickass Torrents, but then became the target of internet crackdown operations themselves. You can find out more about Proxy software such as Anonymous-Proxies.net here.
The most recent such move, part of the so-called Proxy House Operation, took down a few key proxy websites which allowed internet users’ access to the torrent websites in question. It isn’t clear yet who is behind these sites being taken down, but it’s highly probable that the initiative belongs to law enforcement agencies. Here is an overview of what happened, as well as a few solutions to try if you’ve experienced any discomfort on account of this move yourself.
How do Proxy Websites Work?
A proxy website enables you to bypass the usual address of a website’s server, in case you lose access to it. Whenever a website you’re trying to visit seems to be down, it is in fact possible that the website is still functional, only that you’ve lost access to it via the politics of access restricted for certain geographical areas where you live. For example, websites may not be available in certain countries due to copyright issues or are only available for the countries in which there are members.
If this is the case, and the website you are trying to access is actually up but unavailable for your current IP address or jurisdiction, you can manage to access it through proxy websites and their servers. What is a proxy server? A proxy website can remotely mirror the server of the website which you are trying to access, providing you the same content but from a different server address, the one of its own server. This allows you to bypass the restriction for the original website you were intending to visit, but when the proxy server itself manages to get on the blocked list (as happened now), you have to look for an alternate proxy or solution.
How to Continue Accessing the Torrents you Need
First of all, you should know that there are very few chances to unblock websites proxy by yourself, even if you are an experienced hacker yourself. You can either wait for the dust to settle and see which of the proxies currently down are going to be accessible again in the near future, or you can look for alternate proxies than the ones you may have used so far. If you’re looking for a good and up to date proxy website list, you can find one for the top free proxies of 2015 here.
Thus, the Proxy House website cannot be anymore used for accessing restricted torrent sites, but there are still plenty of other proxy websites still up and running. In a previous statement released earlier this year for Torrent Freak, Proxy House representatives indicated that they control over 17,000 different domains, and while the exact list of servers which have been taken down is still unclear, you can still access Pirate Bay torrents and Kickass Torrents and so on through other proxies. Proxy House and the domains formerly under its control seem to now be listed for sale online.
