In early 2012 the computer world will see a new gadget hit the market that is unlike anything before it, well at least not in this combination. Samsung has announced that their new SE-208BW external DVD burner will be included with WiFi capabilities as well as DLNA support. Why is a DVD burner with WiFi a cool idea you ask? Well here are a few things that you can do with it:
Stream DVD movies to your iPad or Android powered tablets. Yes, this is the only reason I will pick up one of these drives. Samsung has stated that there will be a free app available that will allow DVD streaming for both iOS and Android when this product hits the market. So with this drive there is no need to convert DVD into iPad formats anymore.
Also Allshare devices will be able to watch this content from a disc source in addition to being able to backup data on these tablets/smart phones to CD or DVD media. Yes backup data from these devices, how cool is that?
The SE-208BW will also act as a repeater to extend the range of your WiFi signal and also act as a personal cloud server when attached to an external HD by a Ethernet cable.
The specs for this drive are as follows: Supports both Windows and Mac operating systems. USB powered. Included Buffer Under Run suppport to prevent burning errors and will write up to 24x CD-R(W), 8X DVD reading and 8X DVD±R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD+R Dual Layer, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer, 8X DVD+RW, 6X DVD-RW burning.
Pricing was not available but the drive should be in stores January 2012.
